Have you ever heard about the history of Daimiel? It is certainly fascinating, but first of all, in case you have not heard the name of this town before, we want to clarify that it is located in the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha , and more specifically in the northeast of the province of Ciudad Real.

The history of this municipality is very interesting, since the first human settlement in this area dates back to 2450 BC . It is true that this event was the precedent of a long history that has given us extraordinary infrastructure and civil and religious heritage, thanks to the different civilizations that have occupied it. Therefore, in this post we are going to talk about the history of Daimiel through its monuments.

The history of Daimiel begins many centuries ago. Remains of Iberian and Roman settlements were found in this town. For this reason, it is known that this area was inhabited throughout the Ancient Age . Later, the fact that this city was so close to the Guadiana River made it become an important strategic enclave during the Middle Ages , which caused several wars.

Both Christians and Muslims fought for control of the city, bringing with them war buildings such as the castle of Daimiel, which no longer exists. With the Christian victory, the repopulation of the area began, turning Daimiel into an important possession of the Military Order of Calatrava due to its fertile fields.

It was in 1245 when the name of this town appeared for the first time in a written document: “Daymiel”. After the war, the economic and social growth of Daimiel began, which led to the construction of the Church of Santa María La Mayor. In the 16th century, Daimiel became one of the towns with the largest number of inhabitants in the La Mancha region.

First settlements in Daimiel
